The Youth Platform (TYP) recently concluded the Life Skills Health Education debate finals at Choma Secondary School. This transformative event brought together students from four schools—St. Patrick’s, Shampande, Choma Secondary, and Njase Girls—to tackle critical topics such as sexual reproductive health rights, life skills, and sound decision-making.

The debate was more than just a competition; it was a platform for young people to voice their thoughts, share knowledge, and challenge societal norms around health and well-being. In a world where adolescents are often overwhelmed with information but lack guidance on making informed choices, this initiative provided a much-needed space for dialogue and learning.

After a series of spirited and thought-provoking exchanges, Njase Girls emerged as the champions of the Life Skills Health Education debate, with Shampande Secondary School securing second place and Choma Secondary taking third. St. Patrick’s, though unable to compete for the final positions, contributed significantly to the vibrant discussions.

The event was a testament to the power of collaboration. TYP worked closely with the District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) under the Ministry of Education to ensure the debates were seamlessly integrated into the school calendar. This partnership not only facilitated the smooth execution of the event but also underscored the importance of aligning community initiatives with national education goals.

At its core, the Life Skills Health Education debate initiative is about empowering young people with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate life’s challenges. Adolescence is a critical period for personal development, yet many young people lack access to accurate information and safe spaces to discuss issues like sexual health, gender-based violence, and mental well-being.

The debates aim to fill this gap by creating an environment where learners can engage in open, respectful conversations about these topics. By equipping young people with essential life skills, TYP is helping them make informed decisions that will shape their futures and contribute to healthier, more resilient communities.

Mr. Mudenda, the head teacher of Choma Secondary School, expressed his gratitude for the initiative, emphasizing its transformative impact.

“Through these debates, our learners have the opportunity to express themselves and engage in discussions around topics they would not normally address within the school premises,” he said.

He commended TYP for its innovative approach to fostering open and meaningful conversations among students.

Sibu Malambo, Executive Director of TYP, echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in the event’s success.

“This initiative has not only empowered these students with essential life skills but has also fostered a sense of community among them,” he said.

Malambo highlighted the importance of equipping young people with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate life’s challenges, noting that the debates are a step toward building a healthier, more informed generation.

The success of this year’s debates has set the stage for even greater achievements in the future. TYP plans to expand the initiative to include more schools, reaching a broader audience and deepening the impact of the program. The organization is also exploring ways to incorporate more interactive elements, such as workshops and peer-led sessions, to complement the debates and provide students with hands-on learning experiences.

Supported by the Christian Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) and the Ministry of Education, the Life Skills Health Education debate initiative is poised to become a cornerstone of youth empowerment in the region. TYP remains committed to its mission of equipping young people with the tools they need to make informed decisions a vital component of their lifelong success
