Zambia is overall a peaceful and secure country, Zambians are very friendly and curious people, who will welcome you warmly.
Zambia is a landlocked country surrounded by Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Namibia, and Angola. Zambia has 10 provinces and the TYP National Office is in Choma, Southern Province, but with coordination offices in all 10 provinces. Generally, the political situation in Zambia is stable thus the country is calm and safe.
Since gaining political independence in 1964, Zambia has known internal peace. Moments of insecurity were prevalent from external forces when some of the neighbouring countries were fighting for their independence. Since then, the country has been peaceful, and the security risk has been low. This is true of the current moment. Like most other countries, Zambia has its share of criminal activity. Incidences of security concern related to petty criminal activities such as pickpocketing and confidence tricks (Tricks, Frauds) are common in the central business district, especially during the periods from 21st to 31st of the months when most people receive their wages.
Below is a list of crimes that occurs in Zambia:
- Common theft, mostly non-violent: if you place your valuables somewhere unguarded and out of sight, it is most likely to disappear.
- Pickpocketing: This occurs during the day especially in the central business district, bus stations and in shopping malls. To stay clear of this crime, avoid crowded places and do not move with large sums of money on your person.
- Item snatching: This is where the criminal snatches a bag, wristwatch, camera, etc, from their victim, and runs as fast and far away as they can. To avoid this crime, it is advised to hold or strap firmly such items.
- Carjacking: This is not common, but usually occurs at night and in isolated locations where a robber will usually walk to the motorist and demand for the car by use of force. Driving/travelling at night and stopping/parking in isolated places should be avoided.
- House break-ins: To avoid this crime, all entry points to houses or rooms must be kept locked in the absence of the occupants or at night.
- Beware that crowded marketplaces could be a venue where pickpocketing and other forms of petty crime might happen, so be careful and take appropriate precautions.
- Hire only taxis recommended by the office or advise the hotel to get a taxi for you.
- In hotel and accommodations, keep room doors and windows secured.
- Do not change currency in the streets.
- Avoid night travel, especially alone.
- Do not expose money and valuables in public.
